Humanities Intent

The humanities subjects are an important part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Teachers and pupils are naturally inquisitive about the world in which they live. Thought provoking questions will challenge our children to discuss their views, enabling them to have a sense of belonging in time and place and helping them to become responsible global citizens.

In order to achieve this, we will:

  • Enable children to work towards an outcome using relevant real life scenarios, discussion and questioning because we believe children learn best through reflection and discussions with their peers and teachers about something that is meaningful to them.
  • Teach and support the skills children will need to ask and answer geographical and historical questions because we promote the use of clear communication.
  • Support children to explore the past and present and how we view the world because we want children to learn from the past, understand the impact that it has had on the present, through discussion and comparison and develop an awareness of the role that they play in their future.
  • Create opportunities for memorable, meaningful and relatable learning about our world and its people, past and present because this builds on their cultural capital and develops their understanding of the world, giving them the best start to their education.
