Maths Intent

All planning should be driven by the aims…

  • To become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice of complex problems over time so that they have the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and justifying, using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into simpler steps and persevering in finding solutions.

With this in mind, we have three main aims that demonstrate the focus for our school.

  • We provide opportunities to enable children to explore, challenge and apply their learning in a variety of contexts and ways with an emphasis on spatial reasoning, patterns and relationships because we have found that children can apply their learning more once they have the conceptual understanding. Through this, we are developing independent thinking.
  • We encourage children to use accurate mathematical vocabulary to discuss, share and explain their mathematical thinking with others todeepen their understanding and challenge ideas and opinions because our children develop their mathematical reasoning through reflection and thinking when discussing it with others.
  • We believe that mathematics should be inclusive to all and that a good mathematician should be a resilient, resourceful, logical and systematic problem solver and risk taker because we want all children to leave Langstone Infants with an enjoyment of mathematics.
